No. 1 Men’s Lacrosse corrals Mustangs, 18-8

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team extended its unbeaten opening to 2024, using a second-half surge to topple the Stevenson University Mustangs by an 18-8 final on Friday evening at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mustangs struck just 16 seconds into the contest, taking an early 1-0 lead that held for over nine minutes. Brice Bromwell reared the contest to a tie with an unassisted score before aiding Riley Strub on Salisbury's second goal 30 seconds later, 2-1.
  • A Stevenson strike with 78 seconds left in the quarter returned the deadlock before the Sea Gulls used a breakaway man-down goal from Blake Malamphy to reclaim the advantage with just over a minute remaining in the period.
  • Jude Brown connected with Bromwell in the final second of the frame to give Salisbury a 4-2 lead through 15 minutes.
  • Stevenson began the quarter with a pair of unanswered goals, tying the matchup at 4-4 with just over six minutes to go in the half. Brown fed Luke Nestor to push the Sea Gulls back in front before the Mustangs mustered one more in the closing minute to send the game to intermission knotted at 6-6.
  • Salisbury emerged from the locker room with new life, scoring 10 goals and conceding just one in the third quarter. Brown linked with Jack Dowd to break the tie before Ty Keaton dished to Luke Nestor to give the Sea Gulls a 7-5 lead a minute later.
  • Brown picked up a goal of his own with just under 12 minutes to play in the third before Nestor picked up an unassisted tally of his own just 52 seconds later. Brown nabbed his fourth assist on Keaton's second goal after 34 more seconds, putting Salisbury up 10-5 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the stanza.
  • The scoring quieted in the ensuing possessions before Stevenson scored to narrow the margin to four with just over six minutes left in the quarter.
  • Nestor tallied a hat trick in the final five minutes of the third, with Bromwell scoring in between and assisting on the first of his trifecta. Dowd assisted on the final tally, while Malamphy added his second score of the day to give the maroon and gold a 15-6 lead through 45 minutes.
  • Salisbury stacked three goals against Stevenson's two in the final frame, starting with a solo strike from Lucas Ingley. Brown put away a dish from Malamphy five seconds later before Strub buried a Bromwell feed to stamp the 18-8 final score.
