YORK, Pa. – The top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team used a six-goal showing from
Luke Nestor and six-point efforts from
Riley Strub and
Jude Brown to remain unbeaten on the season, prevailing over the No. 10 York (Pa.) Spartans on Saturday afternoon at Kinsley Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Spartans jumped in front early, tallying a trio of goals in just over three minutes to open the contest with a 3-0 lead. Brown found Strub on the doorstep for a one-timer that got Salisbury on the board less than a minute later, tightening the score to 3-1 through four minutes.
- York parried with a finish of their own before the Sea Gulls closed the quarter on a four-goal run. Jack Dowd started the swing, burying a bouncer in the bottom corner before Nestor found the same corner from the opposite side of the field to slim the margin to one.
- Nestor struck again less than three minutes later, rolling to his right and slinging a shot past the Spartan net-minder to bring the bout to a 4-4 tie. Ty Keaton found a top-shelf finish as the final grains of sand fell in the first quarter, giving the Sea Gulls a 5-4 advantage heading to the second stanza.
- York got one back to begin the second period, returning the contest to a deadlock at 5-5. Not quite two minutes later, Nestor burned past his matchup and looked low for his third goal of the contest, returning the Sea Gull advantage with 10:45 left in the opening half.
- Dowd linked with Strub to push the advantage to a pair, and the ranked foes alternated blows through the rest of the quarter. Brice Bromwell found Joe Carozza unmarked on the edge of the crease to counteract a York finish, and Dowd set up Nestor's fourth score of the afternoon to set the halftime line at 9-7 in favor of Salisbury.
- After four quiet minutes to open the third quarter, the Spartans scored to shrink the SU lead to one. Salisbury swung back with a three-goal run, beginning with a heads-up connection between Dowd and Brown in transition. Strub tallied an unassisted strike and fed Charlie White 46 seconds later to cushion the margin, 12-8.
- Salisbury saw goals from Nestor and Brown (assisted by Strub) sandwiched by a trio of Spartan scores, sending the sides into the fourth quarter with a 14-11 score.
- The Sea Gull defense smothered York in the fourth quarter, allowing just two shots and zero on goal in the final 15 minutes. Brown caught fire late, scoring and assisting on both Nestor's sixth goal and Strub's fourth goal to lock down the 17-11 final.
