No. 1 Men’s Lacrosse bruises UMW, 18-6

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team continued its undefeated season on Wednesday evening, toppling Coastal Lacrosse Conference (CLC) foe Mary Washington by an 18-6 final inside Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jude Brown powered the Sea Gulls to a 5-0 sweep of the opening stanza, scoring the opening goal before dishing a helper to Ty Keaton to put Salisbury ahead 2-0 with just under seven minutes to go.
  • Charlie White logged an unassisted goal 24 seconds later, preceding the second Brown-Keaton connection with just under five minutes to go that placed the Sea Gulls ahead by four. Jack Dowd aided Riley Strub with 11 grains of sand left in the hourglass to send the contest to the second quarter with a 5-0 line.
  • Salisbury's offensive onslaught continued in the second, beginning when Brown set up Chris Wong's second goal as a Sea Gull to push the gap to six in the first two minutes. Strub connected with Nestor and Brice Bromwell notched a solo score to add to the Salisbury lead with 11:20 left in the half, 8-0.
  • The Sea Gulls answered the first Eagle goal of the night with unassisted finishes by Brown and Nestor separated by just 46 seconds, widening the maroon and goal margin to nine, 10-1.
  • The Eagles added their second tally in the closing seconds, setting the halftime margin at eight, 10-2.
  • SU embarked on a 6-0 run to begin the second half. Brown helped Strub with just over three minutes played before Dowd netted consecutive scores, courtesy of a helper from Bromwell and a man-up assist from Brown to place the hosts in front by 11, 13-2.
  • Just over two minutes later, Josh Sanchez buried a feed from Strub to increase the distance and Brown's sixth assist of the affair guided Wong to the cage, 15-2. Nestor cashed in a dish from Bromwell a minute later, ballooning the lead to 16-2 with just under 21 minutes remaining.
  • After a pair of Mary Washington goals, Joey Halloran aided Bishop Barnes on Salisbury's penultimate goal of the evening. The Eagles netted one more in the final minute, establishing a 17-5 score through 45 minutes.
  • Blake Epstein's solo score with just under seven minutes remaining was answered by just one Eagle tally, finalizing the 18-6 CLC victory.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Jude Brown tied his best output of the season with a game-high eight points, scoring twice with a season-high six assists.
  • Riley Strub tallied four points on pairs of goals and helpers.
  • Luke Nestor notched his fourth consecutive hat trick.
  • Jack Dowd and Brice Bromwell each tallied three points, the former with two goals and one feed and the latter with one score and a pair of assists.
  • Chris Wong and Ty Keaton each netted two goals in the victory.
  • Blake Malamphy finished 13-for-19 on faceoffs and scooped a game-high eight ground balls. Mackenzie Moreland went 3-for-6 with three ground balls, while Jake McCarthy went 1-for-2 with a ground ball.
  • Bryce Stevenson and John DeFazio terrorized the Eagle offense, combining for nine ground balls and eight of Salisbury's 17 caused turnovers.
  • Nicholas Ransom improved to 33-0 in his collegiate career, making six saves across 38:03 between the pipes. Z.J. Shahin made one save in 11:26 in relief, while Matty Back logged two saves in 5:43 of action and Matt Sentowski closed the final 4:48.
  • The Sea Gulls extended their win streak inside Sea Gull Stadium to 51 games and their overall stretch to 33 contests.
UMW GAME NOTES
  • Jackson Popeck led the Eagle offense with one goal and one assist.
  • Five other Eagles scored in the contest.
  • Keegan Shipe scooped a team-high five ground balls.
  • Nathan Turney picked up three ground balls and forced two Salisbury errors while logging an assist.
  • Jacob Fowler went 5-for-12 on faceoffs with a trio of ground balls, while Greysen Reylek finished 2-for-9 and John Staugaitis totaled two wins in five tries. J.D. Nett won his lone attempt.
  • Wyatt Martin was tagged with the loss, making 15 saves but allowing 13 goals in the opening 35:04. Ryan D'Angelo made three saves in 9:56 of relief, giving way to Riley Green for the ensuing 10:45 before C.J. Cohen closed the final 4:15.

  • The Sea Gulls host the 56th installment of the War on the Shore on Saturday, April 13, welcoming Washington (Md.) to town for a 1 p.m. start at Sea Gull Stadium.
