SALISBURY, Md. –
Jude Brown became Division III's all-time assists king as the top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team rolled past Saint Joseph (Conn.), 27-8, in the second round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Sea Gulls will advance to the third round to meet the winner of Saturday's matchup between ninth-ranked Swarthmore and 17th-ranked Endicott. That contest will be held at Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jude Brown found the back of the net 23 seconds into the first quarter, unleashing an 11-0 Sea Gull run over the first 11 minutes. Brown, Ty Keaton, and Brice Bromwell each scored two goals during the opening surge.
- The Blue Jays got on the board with an unassisted tally from Sam Barbetti at the 2:11 mark of the first, but SU closed out the period with scores from Luke Nestor and Brown to take a 13-1 lead.
- Chris Wong opened the second quarter with a strike on the record-breaking helper from Brown, part of a six-goal SU flurry in the period that pushed the lead to 19-1.
- A pair of USJ markers from Evan Baden and Brendan Tedeschi brought the margin to 19-3 at halftime.
- The teams boxed evenly in the third quarter with each side netting four goals. Joey Halloran notched a pair for Salisbury, while Barbetti's strike in the final seconds of the period made it 23-7 heading into the fourth.
- Bishop Barnes scored a pair of goals as part of a 3-0 Sea Gull squall early in the final quarter, and Josh Sanchez put one away in the final minutes to give the game its final 27-8 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Jude Brown scored a hat trick and dished out five assists for a team-high eight points.
- With his fourth assist of the afternoon – a second-quarter find of Chris Wong – and 276th of his collegiate career, Brown became the all-time assists leader in NCAA Division III. The previous record was held by Will Van Dorn (Kean/Montclair State, 1997-2000) for 24 years.
- Ty Keaton and Joey Halloran each tallied three goals and an assist, while Chris Wong scored the fourth hat trick on the day for the Sea Gulls.
- Jack Dowd racked up five points with a goal and four assists.
- Josh Sanchez netted two goals with three assists for five points of his own, plus five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Blake Malamphy went 14-for-17 in faceoffs and scooped up a team-high 13 ground balls.
- Mackenzie Moreland won 12-of-21 faceoffs with 10 ground balls.
- Jeremiah Stafford and Brady Mancha shared the team lead with three caused turnovers.
- Nicholas Ransom made two saves in nearly 25 minutes of action to move his career record in goal to 40-0.
- Matty Back spent over 35 minutes in the cage, recording one save.
- Salisbury has now won at least one game in 26 straight NCAA Tournaments dating back to 1998.
SAINT JOSEPH GAME NOTES
- Evan Baden paced the Blue Jays with two goals and two assists.
- Sam Barbetti and Nick Pestrichello netted two goals apiece.
- Luke von Borstel went 10-for-19 in faceoffs with four ground balls.
- Vinny Pusateri scooped up four ground balls, while CJ Denson added three and caused two turnovers.
- Trey McCann made 21 saves over nearly 58 minutes in net.

- The Sea Gulls will battle the winner of Saturday's Swarthmore-Endicott game in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. inside Sea Gull Stadium.
