Kell, Williams, Tommer garner major C2C awards; No. 7 Baseball produces nine All-C2C picks

SALISBURY, Md. – The seventh-ranked Salisbury University baseball team saw three of its members garner major Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) postseason awards and nine players picked for the 2024 All-C2C teams, as revealed on Thursday morning. Outfielder Andrew Kell was spotlighted as C2C Player of the Year, while pitcher Cole Williams earned C2C Rookie of the Year and infielder/outfielder Adam Tommer took home C2C Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Joining Kell on the All-C2C First Team are catcher Dylan Winebrenner, first baseman Danny Sheeler, second baseman Kyle Brex, and outfielder Tim Petrucelli. Shortstop Trent Waire and relief pitchers Garrett Beaver, Ethan Hirschfeld, and Shawn Rosemond captured All-C2C Honorable Mention.

Kell, a junior from Columbia, Md., forced his way into the starting lineup and became an eye-popping permanent fixture atop the Sea Gull batting order. He enters the postseason slashing .519/.605/.842 with 14 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 42 RBIs, 40 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, and a 1.457 OPS across 33 of SU's 36 games. Kell owns the best batting average in Division III by over 30 points while ranking third nationally in OBP and ninth in slugging.

Kell becomes the fourth consecutive Sea Gull to be named C2C Player of the Year, joining Justin Meekins (2021), Kavi Caster (2022), and Sheeler (2023). SU has now produced 13 conference players of the year dating back to 2001.

Williams, a freshman from Silver Spring, Md., proved his mettle on the mound in over half of Salisbury's contests during the regular season. Across 20 relief appearances, he posted an 8-1 record with a 4.00 ERA, 11 walks, and 36 strikeouts over a team-leading 45 innings. Williams is tied for the league lead in wins (12th nationally) while ranking sixth in strikeouts and seventh among qualifiers in ERA.

Williams becomes SU's fourth conference Rookie of the Year and its first since Bill Root took home the honors in 2011.

Tommer, a senior from Wilmington, Del., earns the C2C's top academic honor on the back of a 3.859 grade-point average as a Physical Education major. Off the diamond, he is president of the Salisbury PE Society and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Athletics Honor Society, has worked for the SU Sports Information department, and volunteers at Hope and Life Outreach (HALO) Ministries and the First State Feeds Food Drive. Tommer was also named the Golden Gull Sophomore Leader of the Year in 2022 and earned 2023 SHAPE Maryland Outstanding Future Professional recognition. Upon his graduation he will teach health and physical education in Anne Arundel County, Md., while pursuing a Master's degree in Educational Leadership.

Tommer boasts athletic bona fides to match his academic prowess. He started 35 of 36 games in left field, slashing .344/.440/.424 with three doubles, two triples, one home run, 26 RBIs, 31 runs scored, 10 stolen bases, and an OPS of .864. He ranks fourth in the C2C in stolen bases and ninth in batting average.

Winebrenner, a junior from Frederick, Md., made his first season in maroon and gold count in a big way, slashing .358/.469/.600 with nine doubles, one triple, six home runs, 26 RBIs, 35 runs scored, and five steals. One of four qualifying Sea Gulls to post an OPS of a thousand-plus (1.069), Winebrenner is tied for third in the league in home runs and ranks fifth in batting average.

Sheeler, a senior from Towson, Md., becomes a back-to-back All-C2C First-Teamer after another productive season at the plate. He slashed .347/.503/.532 with five doubles, six homers, 33 RBIs, 37 runs scored, nine steals, and a 1.035 OPS while starting every game at first base. Sheeler's six dingers tie him with Kell and Winebrenner for third in the C2C, and with 20 career blasts he is one of 11 SU players all-time to reach the 20-homer plateau.

Brex, a graduate student from Howell, N.J., garners his fourth career all-conference nod after making a trio of All-MAC Commonwealth teams at Widener. Brex slashed .324/.434/.451 with six doubles, two triples, one homer, 18 RBIs, 21 runs scored, and a team-high 12 stolen bases across 26 starts at second base. Brex currently slots second in the C2C in steals despite playing at least seven fewer games than anyone else inside the top six.

Petrucelli, a graduate student from Delran, N.J., adds First-Team All-C2C to a collection that includes two All-United East nods at Penn State Abington. He started all 36 games in right field, slashing .378/.508/.748 with 15 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 46 RBIs, 41 runs scored, and a 1.256 OPS. Petrucelli's 11 home runs – including five in six games from Apr. 16-26 – are four more than the rest of the conference field, as well as tied for eighth in single-season SU history. He is also tied for the league lead in rib-eyes and ranks third in average.

Waire, a freshman from Glen Arm, Md., was the Sea Gulls' Opening Day third baseman but soon plugged the hole at shortstop vacated by former Gold-Glover Stephen Rice. In 24 games (18 starts) he has slashed .369/.488/.492 with five extra-base hits, 15 RBIs, 23 runs, and a .980 OPS.

Beaver, a sophomore from Waynesboro, Pa., was one of SU's most consistent relievers all season long. Through 18 appearances (two starts), the right-hander went 3-2 with a 2.97 ERA, three saves, 20 walks, and 34 strikeouts over 36.1 innings. Beaver boasts the fourth-best ERA in the C2C and is tied for third in saves.

Hirschfeld, a freshman from Norfolk, Va., established his role as a swingman between the rotation and bullpen. The right-hander made 15 appearances (six starts), tying Williams for the most innings on the team (45) and going 4-2 with a 3.40 ERA, 15 walks, and 35 strikeouts. Hirschfeld's ERA is fifth-best in the conference and he is tied for seventh-most punchouts in the league.

Rosemond, a sophomore from Ocean City, Md., was one of SU's most effective relief arms as one of only two southpaws on-staff. The lefty posted a 6-0 record with a 1.85 ERA, two saves, 11 walks, and 25 strikeouts across 34 innings over 18 appearances. Rosemond's six victories are tied for fourth in the league and his ERA would rank second with enough innings to qualify.

Salisbury takes aim for its fourth straight league title at the 2024 C2C Tournament in Newport News, Va. The second-seeded Sea Gulls will clash with third-seeded Mary Washington on Friday at 11 a.m. to open the single-elimination bracket, with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Christopher Newport in the championship at 2:30 p.m.
