SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team opened the 2024 campaign in grand fashion, scoring twice in the second half to begin the Elmer Lord Memorial Tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Rowan University Profs at the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.
The visitors put the Sea Gulls on the back foot in the opening period, but
Josh Wendel stood tall in goal, turning away four Rowan chances before the break to help the Sea Gull backline maintain a scoreless tie at the half.
Key adjustments during intermission paid dividends for the Sea Gulls, who outshot the Profs 8-7 in the second half after being outpaced 10-1 in the category through the first 45 minutes.
Tanner Calzado helped the group break through in the 53rd minute, settling a deflection from
Brady Young and punching it past the Rowan net-minder to establish a 1-0 advantage.
Not quite 15 minutes later,
Brady Young dunked a free-kick dime from
Jack Schwarz into the onion bag to build SU's two-goal advantage. Wendel made a pair of saves to help the Sea Gull defense keep Rowan off the board in the closing minutes.
