SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team used a 75th-minute strike from sophomore forward
Jordan Edwards to secure a second consecutive draw against the Bridgewater (Va.) Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex.
The Sea Gulls (2-1-4) controlled the pace of play in the opening half and outshot the visitors 5-1 through 30 minutes. The Eagles (1-3-2) capitalized on their second corner kick of the contest, with Cassandra Villafan finding Lyric Birkley for the game's first tally in the 40th minute.
Salisbury forced a pair of saves from the Bridgewater net-minder, but both chances were handled to hold the 1-0 score at the break.
Both teams exited the locker rooms on the attack, combining to put five shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the second period. The Sea Gulls would take the next six shots and earn two corner kicks across the ensuing 10 minutes.
Salisbury found its breakthrough in the 75th minute when
Ava Wheeler broke down the far sideline, slipping a feed through to Edwards, who arced an attempt just above the leap of the opposing keeper to bring the score level, 1-1.
The Sea Gulls produced four more shots across the final five minutes. Perhaps the best opportunity for a late winner came in the 88th minute by way of
Rebecca Fairbanks who darted from one end to the other amidst a flock of Eagles and fired across the goal mouth. Despite the heroic effort, her attempt narrowly clipped the woodwork, keeping the match tied through the 90th minute.
