No. 5 Football roars past Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The No. 5 Salisbury University football program earned a 56-21 NJAC road win over Montclair State University Saturday afternoon on Sprague Field.

Both the Sea Gulls (6-0) and Red Hawks (2-4) came up short on fourth-down plays during their opening drives of the ball game. On the second drive of the game for SU, they posted a five-play drive capped off by an Andre Matthews five-yard touchdown rush.

After the Sea Gull defense forced a three-and-out by Montclair State, SU posted a six-play drive with SyRus McGowan finding Mason Fisher for a 28-yard passing touchdown. After another three-and-out from the Red Hawks, McGowan found Dario Belizaire from 58 yards out for a one-play drive. The Sea Gulls led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter of action.

The offensive momentum would slow down for the Sea Gulls as they posted 14 points between the second and third quarters before scoring 21 in the fourth.

The second period of action started with a 34-yard rushing touchdown from McGowan. A late touchdown before the two-minute warning from the Red Hawks cut the Sea Gulls' lead to 28-7. Montclair State would get the ball back again before half, but a Jayden Jones interception would halt the drive.

The SU defense started the second half with a three-and-out, then the offense followed that up with a seven-play touchdown drive, which was capped off by a Matthews one-yard touchdown run. SU led 35-14 heading into the final quarter of action before tacking on three more scores.

Jadyn Thomas added a one-yard touchdown run, McGowan found Micah Brubaker for a 42-yard passing touchdown, and Jimmy Celentano forced a fumble, which was recovered by Kilo Mack, who returned it for 42 yards and the final Sea Gull touchdown of the day.
