GLASSBORO, N.J. – The No. 4 Salisbury University earned a crucial NJAC road victory 31-28 at Rowan University Saturday afternoon inside Coach Richard Wacker Stadium. Head coach
Sherman Wood earned his 200th career victory at SU with the win over the Profs.
The Sea Gulls (7-0, 4-0 NJAC) got the ball first and drove 76 yards on the Rowan (4-2, 2-2 NJAC) defense. The 10-play drive was capped off by a
Dario Belizaire eight-yard rushing touchdown, giving SU the early 7-0 lead. The Rowan offense followed that up with a 13-play scoring drive, which was followed by a two-point conversion, giving Rowan an 8-7 lead with two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The SU offense didn't let Rowan have the lead long; five plays later,
SyRus McGowan found
Micah Brubaker for a 50-yard touchdown, putting the Sea Gulls back in front 14-8. The Sea Gull defense forced a turnover on downs in the red zone for Rowan, but the Gulls offense fumbled on the following drive, giving the ball right back to the Rowan offense. They would go on to tie things up after a failed two-point conversion.
Salisbury got the ball back before half with no timeouts and 1:17 remaining on the clock. 12 seconds later, SU was back up 21-14 after McGowan found Belizaire for an 80-yard touchdown pass. The Sea Gulls took that lead into the halftime break.
Both defenses started the second half with stops. On the second possession of the half for the Profs, they coughed the ball up, and
Jayson Gary was able to recover for the Sea Gulls. Just two plays later, the Rowan defense returned an interception for a touchdown to tie the game 21-21, sending the game into the fourth quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Profs muffed a punt from SU, which set up the Sea Gull offense in prime position.
Darrell Walter was able to scamper in from 14 yards out, giving SU the lead back 28-21. After a three-and-out forced by the Salisbury defense,
Tucker Smack drilled a 25-yard field goal, giving SU the pivotal 31-21 advantage.
Rowan would go on to score and attempt an onside kick, which was recovered by the Sea Gulls. With no timeouts left for Rowan,
Mason Fisher busted a 50-yard rush on third down off a pitch from McGowan, sealing the game for the Sea Gulls and giving coach Wood his 200th career win at Salisbury.
