SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 8 Salisbury University field hockey program picked up a 5-0 win over Denison University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Wednesday afternoon inside Sea Gull Stadium.
The opening NCAA contest for both teams headed into the second quarter of action scoreless. Salisbury (18-2) posted three shots and three penalty corners but could not break through.
The Sea Gull offense got rolling late in the second quarter, scoring two goals in the matter of a minute.
Morgan Bradford broke the tie with under five minutes left before halftime off an assist from
Kelly Webber during a penalty corner. Just one minute later, it was
Alex Kupper scoring off a double assist from
Marli McDorman and Bradford.
Salisbury outshot Denison (12-7) 12-1 in the first half of action. In the second half, the Sea Gull offense kept the momentum rolling, adding three second-half goals to cruise to victory.
Caroline Pusey joined the scoring party at the end of the third period off an assist from
Kaitlyn DeModna. Both McDorman and Pusey went on to add to the totals in the final two minutes of the contest.
Game Notes
- Pusey finished with two goals on four shots.
- McDorman posted one goal with two assists on five shots and now has surpassed 100 points in her SU career.
- Bradford tallied three assists along with her goal.
- The Sea Gulls outshot the Big Red 24-4 while putting 18 of those shots on target.
- SU finished with a total of 19 penalty corners.
The Sea Gulls will travel to Newport News, Va., for the NCAA second and third rounds on November 15
th and 16
th. SU will battle No. 11 Dickinson in the second round on the campus of Christopher Newport University on Saturday, the 15
th, at 2 p.m.
