Women's Basketball drops Coaches vs Cancer opener against York (Pa.)

YORK, Pa. - The Salisbury University women's basketball program dropped the Coaches vs Cancer Classic opening game 64-55 against York College (Pa.) Friday afternoon inside Wolf Gym on the campus of York College. 

York used a strong first quarter to jump out to an early lead, outscoring Salisbury 16-8 in the first quarter. The Spartans shot 32 percent from the field in the opening quarter, while the Sea Gulls struggled to get going, shooting just 16 percent. 

The Spartans carried that momentum into the second period, building their halftime lead to 13, leading 36-23. The SU offense started rolling in the third slate of action, outscoring York 21-10. The Sea Gulls were able to shoot 33 percent from three in that quarter, while going 47 percent from the floor overall. Salisbury started the quarter on an 11-2 run, which left them trailing by only two points heading into the final quarter of action. 

The Sea Gulls were able to tie the game at the beginning of the fourth. With two minutes and 20 seconds left, SU trailed by two, but the Spartans closed the game on a 9-2 run to earn the victory. Nicole Miller led the Sea Gulls with 16 points along with four steals. Abby Plaugher posted 14 points with five rebounds, while Kayla Nieberlein grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds with eight points. 

Game Notes
- Keturah Stewart posted six points and six rebounds. 
- SU finished shooting 30 percent from the field and 17 percent from deep. 
- York won the rebounding battle 50-44.
- Salisbury posted 28 points in the paint along with 13 second-chance points. 

The Sea Gulls are right back in action tomorrow for a Consolation Game in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on the campus of York College (Pa.) when they battle Waynesburg University at 1 p.m.
