SALISBURY, Md. –
Lauren Chesney delivered a strike from well outside the box into the top right corner in double overtime to advance the Salisbury University women's soccer team (6-10-5) past Johnson & Wales Charlotte (8-8-1) 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The defenses proved to reign supreme in regulation time.
Riley Kinzeler was tested once in the first half, making a routine save, while the Wildcats' defense thwarted the Sea Gulls, despite SU generating ten shots in the first frame, with three coming from
Ashley Pantano.
The Maroon and Gold outpaced JWU 16-1 in shots in the second session. Six of the Sea Gulls' shots went on target, being shielded by Wildcat keeper Allison Bryman.
The first overtime segment saw the Sea Gulls hold the Wildcats to no shots, but neither side could collect a golden goal during the ten minutes of play.
In the 103rd minute, Chesney collected the ball near the sideline, waltzed towards the box, and fired a right-footed missile into the back of the net to push the Sea Gulls through to the next round.
