Men’s Soccer advances into C2C Championship with semifinal win over UMW

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's soccer program earned a 2-0 victory over the University of Mary Washington in the Coast-to-Coast tournament semifinals Friday night at Captains Field on the campus of Christopher Newport University. The Sea Gulls punched their ticket into the conference championship for the first time since 2015.

The Salisbury (9-5-5) offense created plenty of momentum in the first half, outshooting Mary Washington (9-7-3) 9-3. The Sea Gulls tallied three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of action while going on to hit the post in the 18th minute.

SU also tallied two corners while UMW posted zero corner kicks in the first half as the teams headed into the halftime break scoreless.

The scoreless semifinal showdown did not stay that way for long. In the 50th minute of the match, just five minutes into the second half, David Brunetti sent a laser beam into the top right corner, giving the Sea Gulls the lead. The goal came off the foot of Brunetti but was set up by a smooth give-and-go double assist from Tanner Calzado and Peter Beil.

In the 76th minute, Jacob Rarig shut the door on the Eagles. Raring blasted a shot off an assist from Jake Trama, giving the Sea Gulls the 2-0 advantage and securing their spot in the Conference Title bout.

Game Notes
  • Brunetti, the conference's Rookie of the Year, tallied his eighth goal of the season, which leads the Sea Gulls.
  • Raring posted his second goal of the season and sixth of his SU career.
  • Both Beil and Calzado earned their second assists of the season.
  • For Trama, he earned his first career assist as a Sea Gull.
  • Nate Jones posted four saves in the shutout victory.
  • SU went on to outshoot UMW 24-11 and put 13 of those 24 shots on target.
The Sea Gulls will battle CNU on Sunday for the C2C Conference Tournament Championship at either 10 a.m. or 12 p.m. on Captains Field.
