Women’s Basketball soars past Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. – The Salisbury University women's basketball program picked up an 88-68 road win over Virginia Wesleyan University Wednesday night inside Townebank Arena. The Sea Gulls (7-3) outscored the Marlins (5-3) in every quarter of the ball game, earning a dominant win.

Salisbury outscored Virginia Wesleyan by six in the first quarter of action and by five in the second to earn an 11-point lead at the halftime break. The game was tied three times in the first quarter, but once the Sea Gulls controlled the lead, they never gave it up.

SU hit five threes in the first half and posted a 60 percent shooting percentage from the floor in the second quarter. The Sea Gulls were able to score eight points off turnovers and seven second-chance points in the first half, helping them earn the 44-33 halftime lead.

The momentum kept rolling in the second half for the Gulls, outscoring the Marlins 23-20 in the third quarter and building on the halftime lead. Salisbury headed into the final quarter of action leading 67-53. SU tallied four steals in the third and got to the free-throw line eight times, knocking down seven.

The offense rolled on in the final period of action for the Sea Gulls, outscoring the Marlins 21-15 and securing an 88-68 win. Jen Juhring posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Juhring shot a blistering 71 percent from the floor and knocked down two three-pointers. Nicole Miller and Keturah Stewart both posted 18 points while combining for nine rebounds.

  • Abby Plaugher finished with 13 points, six assists, and three rebounds.
  • Kayla Nieberlein posted 10 points with six rebounds.
  • All five starters for the Sea Gulls finished with double-digit scoring.
  • SU finished with 19 points off turnovers and 16 second-chance points.
  • Salisbury won the rebound battle 40-28.
The Sea Gulls are back in action for Camper Appreciation Day on Saturday, Dec. 20th, when they host Shenandoah University at 2 p.m. inside Maggs Gymnasium.
