Fourth quarter surge pushes Women's Basketball past Virginia Wesleyan

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University women's basketball program got back in the win column with a 68-54 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Monday night inside Maggs Gymnasium. 

The Sea Gulls (11-12) struggled to get going in the first quarter shooting 14 percent from the field. The Marlins earned a 17-4 lead heading into the second quarter of action. 

SU cranked up the intensity in the second out scoring Virginia Wesleyan 26-13. The Sea Gulls used a 15-0 run to end the second quarter crawling back to tie the game at halftime. 

Both teams battled in the third with back-and-forth scoring with the Sea Gulls earning a two-point advantage heading into the final quarter of action. Salisbury doubled up Virginia Wesleyan in the fourth 24-12 snapping their three-game skid. SU shot 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three in the quarter while holding the Marlins to 20 percent from the floor and 0-4 from downtown. 

Nicole Miller recorded 17 points to lead the Sea Gulls. Jen Juhring posted five points with nine rebounds while six of her nine rebounds were offensive. 

Game Notes
- SU grabbed 17 offensive rebounds which led to 14 second-chance points.
- The Gulls also got out in transition scoring 17 points off turnovers.
- Abby Plaugher and Alex Bull both posted 14 points while combining for nine rebounds and seven assists. 
- Kayla Nieberlein scored 13 while adding seven rebounds.  

The Sea Gulls are back home to take on No. 9 Christopher Newport University on Thursday, Feb. 20th at 6 p.m. inside Maggs Gymnasium for their regular season finale.
