SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team swarmed the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University to earn its seventh consecutive victory on Tuesday evening, forcing the most turnovers of any Sea Gull unit in over a decade on its way to a 15-8 victory at Sea Gull Stadium.
Brice Bromwell and
Riley Strub got to work on their combined 13 points just over five minutes into the opening period, with the former assisting the latter to give the Sea Gulls (7-0) an answer to Ohio Wesleyan's opening score. The Bishops (3-3) regained the lead just over two minutes later to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Sea Gull poles forced five miscues in the opening quarter's final seven minutes to help SU claim their first lead of the day, 3-2. Bromwell and Strub re-upped their connection before
John DeFazio scooped a ground ball and linked with
Ryan Della in transition to begin what would balloon to a 9-1 run stretching to halftime.
In the final seconds of an extra-man opportunity stretching the quarter-break,
Connor Herraiz found Strub for his third goal through 16 minutes.
Ty Keaton set the table for Della's second score not two minutes later before depositing a feed from Herraiz into the onion bag, and Della turned a Bromwell pass to points to build a 7-2 advantage prompting an OWU timeout with just under nine minutes left in the half.
The Bishops logged their third goal out of the stoppage, but the break did little to disrupt SU's stride. Keaton snatched a solo score just 17 seconds before Herraiz fed Wong for his first goal of the affair. Bromwell capped the half with an individual effort for the 10th Sea Gull goal, sending the game to half with a 10-3 score.
SU slung in a pair of quick goals to begin the second half, with Herraiz aiding Bromwell through 68 seconds and Bromwell finding Della 78 seconds after that to grow the lead to nine, 12-3. Nearly seven scoreless minutes passed before Strub parried a pair of Bishop goals with two of his own, but OWU added an EMO goal in the final minute to set the score at 14-6 heading to the final 15.
Strub's sixth strike and Bromwell's fifth assist came with just over eight minutes to go, sandwiched by two Ohio Wesleyan tallies to set the 15-8 final score. The Sea Gull defense forced eight Bishop turnovers in the final quarter to maintain the distance.
