WESTMINSTER, Md. – The No. 8 Salisbury University football program traveled to McDaniel College Saturday afternoon, picking up a 62-7 win inside Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.
The Sea Gulls (2-0) opened the game with an 11-play drive, which included one fourth-down conversion, and ended with a
Jadyn Thomas 12-yard touchdown run. The Green Terror (0-2) picked up one first down on their opening drive but were forced to punt after the SU defense settled in.
Salisbury posted another long drive with a nine-play drive ending in a
Darrell Walter four-yard rushing touchdown.
Patrick Sheil intercepted a pass on the ensuing McDaniel drive, giving the SU offense the ball back at the end of the first quarter of action with a 13-0 lead.
Andre Matthews started the drive with a 40-yard rush, setting up SU inside the red zone. Three plays later,
SyRus McGowan found
Dario Belizaire for a 19-yard passing touchdown.
With just under three minutes left before halftime, Walter found the endzone for the second time in the half. McDaniel was able to put together a 10-play drive before the half to get on the board. SU led 27-7 at the halftime break.
The Sea Gulls went on to score 35 points in the second half while holding the Green Terror scoreless. SU started the half with McGowan once again finding Belizaire for a 15-yard score. Thomas found his second score of the ball game while
Malachi Dokes and
Kyle Frank also found rushing touchdowns.
Game Notes
- The Sea Gull offense posted a total of 565 yards of offense while holding the Green Terror to just 211 total yards.
- SU ran for 477 yards on the ground while holding McDaniel to 28 yards rushing.
- McGowan posted three passing touchdowns with 140 total yards of offense. Belizaire was on the receiving end of all three passing touchdowns and finished with 120 total yards of offense.
- The Gulls had five different rushers post 50 or more yards rushing. Walter finished with 76 yards along with his two touchdowns.
- Matthews finished with 70 yards, and Frank posted 67 yards with his touchdown.
- Malachi Baker led the defense with five total tackles and a fumble recovery that was forced by Philip Smith, who also posted five tackles.
- The SU defense held McDaniel to three of 12 on third downs and zero for three on fourth downs. They also racked up six tackles for loss and two sacks.
The Sea Gulls head to the bye week but will be back in action on September 27
th, when they travel to The Catholic University of America with kickoff set for 2 p.m. from Washington, D.C.
