WASHINGTON, D.C. – Behind a pair of three-touchdown quarters and stifling defense, the sixth-ranked Salisbury University football team trounced the Catholic Cardinals, 55-6, on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium.
The Sea Gulls received the opening kickoff and needed just six plays to take it 65 yards for the score.
SyRus McGowan found
Micah Brubaker for a 32-yard pass to move it into the red zone, and
Andre Matthews took it the final eight yards to the house on the next play to put SU up 7-0.
Salisbury then forced punts on each of CUA's first two drives and responded with touchdowns.
Jadyn Thomas scampered for a 45-yard scoring run that made it 14-0, and Matthews found the hole again for a 22-yard scoring rush that made it 21-0 before the end of the first quarter.
Neither side could break through on their first two drives of the second quarter, but after forcing a turnover on downs at their own 30 the Sea Gulls methodically marched it the other way for another tally. Facing a 4th-and-5 from the Cardinal 17, McGowan zinged one to
Dario Belizaire for the TD, and SU entered halftime with a 27-0 cushion.
Catholic found offensive life after receiving the third-quarter kickoff, with Daequan Harvin's 12-yard touchdown run capping a 75-yard drive to get the Cardinals on the board, 27-6. Salisbury answered with an 80-yard drive of its own, capped by a 27-yard touchdown catch by
Daniel Clark that made it 35-6.
Salisbury forced a pair of turnovers deep in opposing territory on the next two CUA drives. First,
Ryan Salvosa intercepted a pass to set SU up at the CUA 28, and two plays later
Darrell Walter ran it in from 21 yards out. Then
Jayson Gary pounced on a fumble at the CUA 29, and
Matthew Sims ran it in on the very next play to extend the lead to 48-6.
SU added one more touchdown for good measure in the fourth as
Jason Oakes carried it in from 10 yards out, giving the game its final 55-6 margin.
