Men’s Basketball drops tight affair with East Texas Baptist

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team was defeated by the East Texas Baptist University Tigers by a score of 70-65 in Sunday afternoon's clash inside the Freeman Center.

The early going consisted of Jamison Graves and Daniel Oyediran providing ten of the first 12 points for the Sea Gulls (10-9). Graves delivered the first four points for the Maroon and Gold, while Oyediran put home a slam assisted by Graves and scored a layup aided by Graves on the following trip down the floor.

The Tigers (6-13) broke through with two converted shots from distance by Jack Pease. Graves tried to keep up with the pace by knocking down a three after Aidan Camper located him beyond the arc. Graves once more found Oyediran for a slam, and Camper sank two free throws to make it a point game in favor of ETBU.

With the Tigers pulling it to 29-24, Camper lined up a three-pointer assisted by Churchill Bounds. After a Michael Roberts layup for the Tigers, Jamison Graves brought the contest back within a possession with a mid-range jumper, but the Tigers concluded the half with six of the next points to make it 37-31 at the break.

Leon Elung began the second frame with a putback after a Bounds misfire. After a Tigers three, Graves converted an and-one and a left wing three in transition to make it 40-39 with just under 16 minutes to play. ETBU came out of the media timeout and halted the Salisbury momentum with two more field goals from distance.

Oyediran delivered a catch-and-shoot triple with just over 12 minutes to play, Elung followed with a layup, and Graves got two shots to fall to knot the affair up at 50. After two points from Jack Pease, Bounds deadlocked the game again at 52.

Two straight buckets from Pease and a three following an and-one from Roberts brought the Tigers to an eight-point lead heading into the final media timeout. The Gulls brought the game within three after Joey Lutz got a floater to go, but the Tigers closed out the last five seconds with converted free throws.
