SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball program earned a 68-53 Seaside Smiles Youth Day victory over Gwynedd Mercy University Saturday afternoon inside Maggs Gymnasium. The Sea Gulls also honored the Salvation Army Potomac Division as their M&T Bank Everyday Hero of the game.
The Sea Gulls (10-4) earned the wire-to-wire victory by leading all but 18 seconds of the contest. SU held the Griffins (3-9) to just 18 points in the second half.
Salisbury carried the momentum they gained from Puerto Rico right into the first quarter of action, outscoring Gwynedd Mercy 24-14. Salisbury hit five threes in the first quarter and shot 53 percent from the floor.
The Griffins closed the gap in the second, outscoring SU by three and heading into the halftime break trailing by seven.
The Sea Gulls were able to shut the door in the second half, holding Gwynedd Mercy to just 18 points for the entire half and just seven in the fourth quarter.
Nicole Miller led all scorers with 28, one point shy of tying her career-high. She also added three rebounds and three assists.
Game Notes
- Abby Plaugher tallied 14 points with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
- Kayla Nieberlein flirted with a double-double, posting eight points and 11 rebounds. She also added two steals and two assists.
- Keturah Stewart scored nine points with six rebounds.
- The Sea Gulls won the rebound battle 39-28 and posted 15 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds.
- Salisbury finished shooting 43 percent from the floor while holding Gwynedd Mercy to just 33 percent.
Salisbury will hit the road for four consecutive games, starting with McDaniel College on January 7
th at 5 p.m.
