ABINGTON, Pa. – The 17th-ranked Salisbury University men's soccer team lengthened its unbeaten streak to seven games by battling the Penn State Abington Nittany Lions to a 1-1 draw at Memorial Field on Saturday evening.
After
Clif Nehman made a save roughly two minutes past the opening whistle, both sides were held shotless until Frankie Rafferty struck the post, then found the back of the net in the 31st minute to put the Nittany Lions (7-4-4) on the board.
The Sea Gulls' (11-1-3) first shot of the afternoon came after the Abington goal from
David Brunetti, which PSA's Hector Ortiz stopped. SU put together a trio of shots afterwards to lead 4-3 in attempts at the end of the half.
Salisbury ramped up the search for an equalizer but Nehman was required to make a kick save on a bid from inside the box, keeping the match within striking distance. The Maroon and Gold were awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, which Brunetti converted to knot the score.
Brunetti and
Liam Pierce had a pair of chances blocked before Nehman came with another stop. SU's last chance on goal came from the left foot of
Dale Gordon, which was denied.
