Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Will DeBoer

No. 6 Field Hockey sunk by No. 3 CNU

SALISBURY, Md. – The sixth-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team couldn't solve the stalwart defense of the third-ranked Christopher Newport Captains, falling 2-0 on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Captains controlled the pace in the first quarter, outshooting the Sea Gulls 5-2, but Maddie Castaneda made a pair of saves to keep it scoreless. Castaneda made two more saves in the second quarter, while CNU's Ella Fallen made a pair of first half saves, and the teams headed into the break with dueling goose eggs.

The stalemate continued long into the third quarter, but in the 42nd minute the Captains found a seam on the right side, and Emma Weber fed it into the middle of the circle for Riley Iasiello to hammer it home and put the visitors up 1-0.

CNU doubled its lead early in the fourth quarter as Lindsey Loar capitalized on an Avery Mast feed and deflected it in, making it 2-0 in the 48th minute. From there the Captains clamped down on defense, allowing just one SU shot across the second half on the way to a clean sheet.

GAME NOTES
  • Regan Worley managed two of the Sea Gulls' three shots, including one on goal. Tessa Gray took the other shot on goal.
  • Maddie Castaneda registered a season-high five saves to keep SU in the game.
  • The Captains outshot Salisbury 17-3 and won the penalty corner battle 7-3.

The Sea Gulls are back in action on Wednesday for their annual Corners for Cancer game against Mary Washington, with game time from Sea Gull Stadium slated for 6 p.m.
