MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Salisbury University field hockey team continued its strong weekend in New York with a dominant 7-1 victory over SUNY Morrisville on Sunday afternoon at Drake Field.
The Sea Gulls (8-2, 2-0 SUNYAC) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Layla Kent opened the scoring in the seventh minute off an assist from Elena Weychert. Kent struck again less than six minutes later, giving Salisbury a 2-0 advantage. Morrisville answered with a goal from at 12:45, cutting the deficit to 2-1 after the opening 15 minutes.
Salisbury exploded offensively in the second quarter, scoring four goals in a span of just 1:35. Alex Kupper extended the lead to 3-1 at 21:06 with an assist from Kent before Ryan Lowe found the cage just 24 seconds later. Kelly Webber added another goal at 22:05, and Dakotah Trader capped the four-goal outburst at 22:41 with Webber providing the assist. The Sea Gulls carried a 6-1 advantage into halftime.
The Sea Gulls continued to control the action in the third quarter, generating nine shots and three penalty corners. Juliana Stepp added to the Salisbury lead at 41:54, scoring off an assist from Ramsey Coffman to make it 7-1.
Salisbury's defense kept Morrisville off the scoreboard in the final quarter, while the Sea Gulls continued to generate offensive opportunities. The Sea Gulls finished the afternoon with a 29-8 advantage in shots and held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
Game Notes
- Salisbury earned eight penalty corners compared to five for Morrisville.
- Kent led Salisbury with two goals, an assist, 10 shots and eight shots on goal. Kent's two goals give her a team-high three points in the contest.
- Maddie Castaneda made three saves in 41:54 of action before Kaitlin Cashman entered in the third quarter and made two saves.
The Sea Gulls return to action back inside Sea Gull stadium when they host SUNY Oneonta on Sunday, Oct. 11th, at 11 a.m.
