SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University women's basketball program fell 71-53 against Christopher Newport University Wednesday night inside Maggs Gymnasium on Play4Kay night.
The Captains (18-4) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before the Sea Gulls (14-9) weathered the storm and responded with a 6-0 run of their own. The teams ended the first quarter of action all tied up at 15-15 with the SU getting 11 points from players coming off the bench. Salisbury finished the quarter shooting 47 percent from the floor.
The Captains bench caught fire in the second quarter, scoring 17 of their 21 points for the quarter. CNU won the quarter 21-15 and headed into the halftime break with a six-point lead. The Captains capitalized off turnovers scoring 13 points off those chances.
The Sea Gulls offense continued to struggle in the second half, posting a 25 percent shooting percentage in the third and 27 percent in the fourth. SU would continue to battle thought, cutting the CNU lead to seven points with five and a half minutes remaining. The Captains would shut the door, ending the game on a 17-6 run.

The Sea Gulls are back in action at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday at 4 p.m.
