Women's Basketball drops road contest against Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Salisbury University women's basketball program fell 61-47 on the road against the University of Mary Washington Saturday afternoon.

The Sea Gulls (14-10) used a powerful first quarter to earn an early advantage, outscoring the Eagles (10-13) 17-11. SU posted a 54 percent shooting percentage from the floor in the first quarter, while holding UMW to 36 percent from the floor. Salisbury won the rebound battle 9-4 to open the game and grabbed four offensive boards.

The Eagles responded quickly in the second quarter, outscoring the Sea Gulls 18-11 and heading into the halftime break with a slight one-point advantage. Mary Washington shot a blazing 80 percent from the field, while Salisbury struggled, posting a 20 percent shooting percentage. UMW also won the rebound battle in the second quarter, 12-5.

The Eagles carried that momentum into the third quarter of action, outscoring the Sea Gulls 18-6 and earning a 13-point advantage heading into the final quarter of action. The shooting struggles continued for SU, posting a 19 percent shooting percentage for the quarter. The Sea Gulls tried mounting a comeback in the final quarter of action but the Eagles shut the door late, outscoring SU 14-13 and earning the victory. 

Game Notes
- Kayla Nieberlein led the Sea Gulls in scoring with 11, while adding four rebounds. 
- Nicole Miller was the other SU player in double figures with 10.
Keturah Stewart led SU in rebounds with six while also adding nine points.
- SU finished just shooting 30 percent from the floor, while UMW posted a 49 percent shooting percentage. 
- UMW also won the rebound battle 40-31.

The Sea Gulls are back in action on Saturday, February 21st, at 2 p.m. when they host Regent University for Senior Day and Alumni Day to wrap up the 2025-26 regular season.
