Strub, Herraiz headline No. 5 Men’s Lacrosse’s triumph over Stevenson

SALISBURY, Md. – Colossal offensive outputs from Riley Strub and Connor Herraiz helped fuel the fifth-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team past the Stevenson University Mustangs 20-9 on Saturday afternoon from inside Sea Gull Stadium. During halftime, the Sea Gulls honored the 2016 national championship-winning team.

The Sea Gulls (8-1) went in front 5-3 after 15 minutes of play. Strub started and ended the first frame with tallies. Herraiz, Michael Leahy and Ryan Della helped give the Gulls a two-goal lead despite a pair of scores from the Mustangs (1-7) in the waning minutes of the quarter.

A shutout 4-0 second stanza commenced in favor of the Maroon and Gold. Strub recorded three goals throughout the segment, while Tristan Plotts helped extend the Sea Gulls' lead to 9-3 at halftime.

The Gulls doubled up Stevenson 6-3 in the third period. Bryce Stevenson started the run by beating the Mustangs' ten-man ride after a pass from Matt Sentowski, Bret Bergey, Trent Lucovich, Leahy, Herraiz and Strub added reinforcements to make it 15-6 heading into the final frame.

Salisbury outpaced Stevenson 5-3 to close out the contest. Strub led the way with two more tallies, Bergey, Herraiz and Plotts helped put a close to a fourth-straight win for the Gulls.

GAME NOTES
  • Riley Strub buried a career-high eight goals. The senior is the first Sea Gull to find twine eight times since Cross Ferrara '23 did so on February 19, 2022, against Scranton.
  • Connor Herraiz recorded three goals and six assists to reach nine points for the second time this season.
  • Bret Bergey, Michael Leahy and Tristan Plotts each added in a pair of goals. Bergey registered a helper.
  • Cooper Keesee wreaked havoc on defense, causing three Stevenson turnovers and vacuuming up four ground balls.
  • Bryce Stevenson scored his fifth career goal.
  • Blake Malamphy won 21-of-25 face offs in the affair, adding 17 ground balls. Charles Fritchman went a perfect 5-for-5 from the dot.
  • Matt Sentowski tallied his first career assist and made seven saves in a winning effort.
  • The Sea Gulls outshot the Mustangs 61-28, won the ground ball battle 59-23 and went 21-of-23 on clearing attempts.
The Sea Gulls return to action when they host the Williams College Ephs inside Sea Gull Stadium on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
