CHESTERTOWN, Md. – An 86th-minute goal from Washington (Md.) gave the Shorewomen a 3-2 edge over the Salisbury University women's soccer program on Tuesday evening at Roy Kilby Jr. Stadium in the team's 2026 season opener.
Four minutes into the affair,
Samantha Root swept in a corner kick, finding
Talyn Catena, who struck it inside the far post to break the ice. Roughly 15 minutes later, the Shorewomen (1-0) found the equalizer, then notched a late first-half tally after
Audrey Kregelka was denied on the other end for SU (0-1).
Moments after
Brooke Spadin was stopped by Washington's Olivia Allen,
Skylar Williams peppered two shots towards goal, with the ladder falling into the onion bag to level the score 13 minutes into the second stanza.
Callie Chesney and
Jordan Edwards both followed SU's second marker with shots that missed the net. In the 75th minute,
Riley Kinzeler kept the match at two-all by rejecting a bid from Jackie Pascual.
Spadin's second try of the half was turned aside minutes later. Just before the 87th minute, the Shorewomen broke through a shot outside the box to take a late 3-2 advantage. Salisbury blitzed Washington with three attempts but could not equalize.
GAME NOTES
- Talyn Catena recorded her first career goal in her first collegiate appearance.
- Skylar Williams tallied her fourth career score with SU and found the back of the net in the opening contest for the second consecutive season. Williams and Brooke Spadin led the team with three shots each.
- Samantha Root collected her first career assist.
- Riley Kinzeler was tagged with the loss and made one save.
- The Sea Gulls were outshot 14-13, but put seven shots on goal compared to WAC's four.
The Sea Gulls head to St. Mary's City, Maryland, to participate in the Seahawk Classic on Friday against McDaniel. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Jaime L. Roberts Stadium.
