BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. – The Salisbury University women's golf team registered its lowest two-round score in modern program history, finishing strong in a crowded Shenandoah Chinatown Invitational on Sunday at Cacapon Resort State Park.
The Sea Gulls completed Saturday's first round, which had been suspended due to darkness, with a 35-over 323, obliterating the previous program record by 19 strokes. SU put up numbers just as strong over the final 18 holes, carding a 43-over 331 for the team's second-lowest round.
In all, the 78-over 654 landed Salisbury sixth out of 17 teams in the tournament, 11 strokes back of fifth-place Otterbein (643) and 15 up on seventh-place Stevenson (669).
ROUND NOTES
- Stella Jaffe wrapped up the final holes of her first round with a five-over 77 and followed it up with a six-over 78, including a birdie on nine and 12 pars. Jaffe's 11-over 155 for the weekend established a new Sea Gull standard for lowest two-round score, and both of her cards ranked inside the top-three in single-round program history. Jaffe ultimately finished tied for fifth in the field of 91 golfers, one stroke back of fourth and within three strokes of third.
- The only Sea Gull to shoot just 18 holes for the day, Krista Brosius carded a nine-over 81 on the day, finishing seventh overall at a personal-best 13-over 157, which is second to only Jaffe's mark for the program's two-round record.
- Ava Kelly wrapped her opening round with an 11-over 83 before turning around and shaving off two strokes in round two, carding a nine-over 81. Kelly tied for 23rd in the field with a 20-over 164, now the sixth-best weekend mark for a Sea Gull.
- Sydney Lynott carded a 15-over 87 to complete her first round, following it up with a 19-over 91 over the final 18 holes. She finished tied for 54th at a 34-over 178.
- Cailin McCoy finished round one at a 30-over 102 before dropping six strokes in round two at 24-over 96. Her 54-over 198 slotted her in a tie for 79th.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Sept. 21-22 at the Bridgewater Invitational, with both days' rounds slated for 9 a.m. at Lakefield Golf Club in Harrisonburg, Va.
