HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's golf team worked around a lengthy lightning delay to turn in another historic performance to open the two-day Bridgewater Invitational on Monday at Lakeview Golf Club.
The Sea Gulls entered the clubhouse second out of 10 teams at a 31-over 323, matching their lowest total strokes in a round and establishing a new score-to-park mark on the par-73 course. SU holds the silver positioning by two strokes over third-place Southern Virginia (325) and sits 14 strokes back of leader Marymount (Va.), who was 17-over with three golfers still to complete their round at sundown.
ROUND NOTES
- Stella Jaffe came within one stroke of the Sea Gulls' first even-par round in modern program history, carding a one-over 74 with birdies on one, 12, and 14. Jaffe, who established a new SU two-round record earlier this month in her collegiate debut, is currently third on the individual leaderboard of 57, one stroke back of second and three back of the top.
- Sydney Lynott and Krista Brosius each shot a nine-over 82 with one birdie apiece, good for a tie for 12th individually.
- Ava Kelly gave the Gulls four top-20 finishers after the opening round, registering a 12-over 85 with a birdie on 15. Kelly is tied for 20th halfway through the tournament.
- Kaeli Newcomb posted a 28-over 101 for SU's drop score, good for 43rd on the leaderboard.
The Sea Gulls will look to close the gap with Marymount in the second and final round of the Bridgewater Invitational on Tuesday morning. The round will begin at 9:30 a.m. in a shotgun start.
