SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team opened the Elmer Lord Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite University Friday afternoon inside the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex.
The Sea Gulls (1-0-1) gave the home fans a show right after the opening whistle, scoring two goals in the first 18 minutes of action.
Liam Pierce got the scoring started in the 7th minute of action after SU earned a corner kick.
David Brunetti and
Conor Moran earned the assists on the first goal. 11 minutes later
Zach Johnson tallied his first career goal extending the SU lead off an assist from
Dale Gordon.
The Royals (0-2-0) only tallied three shots with one on target in the first half of action, while SU posted 10 shots with five being on target. Salisbury also earned more corners than Eastern Mennonite (3-1) in the first half.
Nate Jones opened the second half with four saves in the first 20 minutes after the Royals cranked up the intensity of the offensive side of the ball. After withstanding the opening second half surge from EMU, the Sea Gulls added to their lead after Brunetti caught the Royals goalie off his line, giving SU a 3-0 lead in the 66th minute of action.
Salisbury tallied three more shots on target in the final 20 minutes of action but could not find the back of the net while closing out the Royals for the 3-0 shutout victory.
GAME NOTES
- Brunetti earned his first career assist as a Sea Gull.
- SU finished with 15 shots and 10 on target, while EMU posted eight shots and five on target.
- Jones posted five saves in goal for his shutout win.
- The Sea Gulls finished with six corner kick chances to just three for the Royals.
The Sea Gulls are right back in action inside the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex tomorrow for day two of the Elmer Lord Memorial Tournament when they battle Albertus Magnus at noon.
