SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
soccer team suffered its second loss of the season, on Wednesday
afternoon, as St. Mary's College (Md.) prevailed 2-1 in a very
physical Capital Athletic Conference game at the SU Soccer Complex.
Seahawk (2-5, 1-1 CAC) senior forward David Reumont made his
first goal of the year a meaningful one as he netted the
game-winner at the 53rd minute of the match.
Salisbury (5-2-1, 2-2 CAC) took 12 shots in the second half, 23
total for the game to St. Mary's five shots, two of which came off
the foot of sophomore Nick Malone, who's shot in
the 57th minute struck off the St. Mary's crossbar. SU continued to
pressure offensively but couldn't get the equalizer before the end
of regulation.
The Sea Gulls trailed for 11 minutes in the first half but
quickly knotted the game when senior midfielder
Wijy Jones scored on a shot past
St. Mary's goalie Rick Besore (nine saves) at the 27th minute.
Jones' third goal of the year, second in the last two games, was
setup by a nice pass from Malone.
St. Mary's got on the board first with a goal by junior Mikael
Tigrett, a strike from the right side of the box, 17 minutes into
the first half.
SU goalie Matt Blue got his third consecutive
start of the season but recorded his first loss along with seeing
his scoreless streak halted at 197 minutes.
Salisbury got a solid performance off the bench from freshman
midfielder Kyle Sterling who had four shots in the
loss.
The two teams combined for 32 team fouls, seven yellow cards and
a red card.
The Gulls end their five-game home stand at 2:00 p.m., Saturday,
September 30, against Greensboro College.
