SALISBURY, Md. - The 14th-ranked Salisbury
University men's soccer team opened up its 2006 campaign in the
Elmer Lord Memorial Soccer Classic against Ursinus College at SU
Soccer Complex on Sunday. The defensive battle went to overtime and
ended in a 1-1 tie.
Salisbury (0-0-1) trailed 1-0 for 26 minutes midway through the
game until senior captain Wijy Jones scored off sophomore Scott
Sparrow's assist during the 56th minute of the game. The two teams
were held scoreless for the rest of regulation which sent the game
into two 10 minutes overtime periods.
In the extra frames the Sea Gull defense stepped up and shut out
the Cougar (0-0-1) offense as Ursinus had no shots. Salisbury on
the other end of the field had four shots, one on goal, but couldnt
score the game-winner.
Ursinus' sophomore forward Othmane Boutayeb scored in the 30th
minute of the first half. Boutayeb fired home a shot just out of
the reach of senior goalie Scott McGuire (four saves), off the
assist from fellow sophomore John George, which forced Salisbury to
play from behind for a good portion of the game.
Salisbury outshot Ursinus, 21-10, and took six more corner
kicks, 10-4, than the Cougars.
The Elmer Lord Memorial Soccer Classic was originally scheduled
as a two-day tournament but the first day of games was washed out
due to tropical depression Ernesto.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Wednesday, September 6
with their first Capital Athletic Conference match at Catholic
University.
