Box Score SALISBURY, Md. -The top-seed Salisbury
University men's soccer team won its sixth Capital Athletic
Conference championship with a 2-0 shutout of second-seed and No. 9
ranked York (Pa.) College at the SU Soccer Complex in front of a
packed crowd of 1,000 fans.
Salisbury (15-4-1) broke the scoreless tie right before halftime
when sophomore Kyle Sterling blasted a shot off
his left foot from the top corner of the box that narrowly beat
Spartan goalie Kyle Marks (four saves) at the 44th minute mark.
Sterling's fifth game-winning goal of the season was set by an
assist from freshman Ben DeLisle.
Sterling was also the catalyst against York in the first
match-up back on September 29 when he scored the game-winner of a
1-0 game in the closing minutes to snap York's 49-game unbeaten
streak. Salisbury is the only team to beat York (19-2) this season,
as they have done it twice.
York sophomore Jon Ports had the Spartans best goal scoring
opportunity in the first half in the 39th minute when he ripped an
unexpected shot outside of the box that bended just over the
crossbar out of bounds.
The Sea Gulls got their second and final goal just nine minutes
into the second half at the 54th minute mark when senior
Andrew Henciak alertly cashed in an errant rebound
off of a Sterling shot. Henciak has stepped up as of late scoring
his only two goals of the season in SU's last two CAC tournament
games.
The Salisbury defense was once again spectacular as it held the
conference's top offensive team scoreless for its 14th shutout of
the season. Sophomore Greg Wellinghoff (12-2)
earned his 12th win of the season as he recoded two saves. The
Spartan offense was held to just three shots on goal and only two
corner kicks for the entire game.
The Sea Gull defense halted a second half surge by the Spartans
when senior All-American Andrew Wheeler maneuvered down the field
and ripped back-to-back shots on goal the first of which was saved
by senior Dave Kroening sliding just in front of
the SU goal for the save. The ball rebounded directly back to
Wheeler who then let loose another shot that was stopped by a wall
of SU defenders. The physical game saw the two teams combine for 36
fouls and four yellow cards.
SU finished the regular-season and CAC tournament with an
unbeaten record of 11-0-1 at home. The Sea Gulls have won six
straight and went a perfect 3-0 in the CAC tournament where the
maroon and gold outscored their opponents 15-0.
Salisbury earns an automatic bid into the 2007 NCAA Division III
men's soccer tournament and will wait for the official pairings
which will be announced on Monday, November 5. SU is poised to make
its sixth NCAA appearance in the last nine seasons and the first
since 2005.
