FREDERICK, Md. - Three days after playing a
NCAA Division III men's basketball record five overtimes against
Marymount (Va.) University the Salisbury University Sea Gulls
returned to the court to face Hood College, the first-place team in
the Capital Athletic Conference. The Blazers wore down the Gulls in
the second half to coast to a 100-83 victory on Saturday afternoon
at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School to conclude the regular-season.
Salisbury (12-13, 7-9 CAC) will now travel to Washington, D.C.,
this Tuesday, February 20, to face second-seed Catholic University
of America in the first round of the CAC tournament. The Sea Gulls
are the seventh seed in the eight team field.
SU senior Ray Williams logged 39 minutes
against Hood and led all Sea Gull scorers with 26 points. Williams
played 57 minutes against the Saints this past Wednesday. Salisbury
forward Frank Gerald (19 points, 10 rebounds)
recorded the only double-double for the Sea Gulls. Senior
Segun Odumeru (14 points) and freshman
Matt DeLizio (10 points) were the other Gulls to
score double figures.
Hood (19-6, 12-4) led 41-34 at the break after trailing 20-12
early in the first half. In the second half, the Blazers went on a
31-15 run to increase their lead to 23 points, 72-49.
Salisbury didn't have an answer for Hood's big man Jesse
Gutekunst (26 points, 15 rebounds), who shot 10-for-15 from the
field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Four of the Blazer
starters ended the game in double figures along with Tim
Ambercrombie who came off the bench and poured in 18 points and
grabbed seven rebounds.
The Blazers will open up the CAC tournament on Tuesday night at
home against eighth-seed Goucher College.
