COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The No. 6 Salisbury
University women's lacrosse team faced its largest deficit of the
2007 season but rallied to defeat Colorado College 8-5 on Friday in
Colorado Springs, Colo. The win capped the Sea Gulls' spring break
trip to the state of Colorado with a 2-0 record.
Salisbury (9-0) trailed 3-0 to Colorado College for the first 21
minutes of the game before the Gulls awoke and ripped off six
straight goals to take control of the game.
Four different Sea Gulls scored in the first half to erase a 3-0
Tiger lead and take a 4-3 advantage into halftime.
Colorado College (3-3) senior Kate Fitzgerald scored two
unassisted goals in a four-minute span to start the game. Tiger
senior midfielder Robin Harvey netted her own unassisted goal at
the 17:12 mark of the first half.
Salisbury answered with back-to-back unassisted goals from
junior Sue Ackermann and senior Natalie
Degele. Sophomore Robyn Bishop then
knotted the game at three apiece on a free position shot with 1:34
left before the half. Sea Gull senior Stephanie
Shores scored her first of two goals on the day, off an
assist from Ackermann, with 35 seconds before the break.
The second half started scoreless but SU senior Katie
Simmons ended that at the 16 minute mark with an
unassisted goal past Colorado College goalie Jess Van Doren (13
saves). Minutes later, junior Jessica Liston
scored off a feed from Shores to put the Gulls up 6-3.
The Tigers answered with back-to-back goals, in just over a
minute, from Fitzgerald and junior Mallory Newton,
off a Harvey assist with 9:43 left in the game.
Salisbury scored the game's final two goals as sophomore
Jessica Chmielewski and Shores found the back of
the net on unassisted goals.
SU freshman goalie Natalie Pappas (eight saves)
recorded her fifth straight win in between the pipes for the Sea
Gulls.
The Sea Gulls outshot the Tigers, 41-21, and scooped up 20
groundballs to CC's 16. SU also won 8-of-15 draw controls in the
game.
Salisbury will host No. 7 Middlebury College at 3:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, March 27.
