Salisbury rallies to defeat Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The No. 6 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team faced its largest deficit of the 2007 season but rallied to defeat Colorado College 8-5 on Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo. The win capped the Sea Gulls' spring break trip to the state of Colorado with a 2-0 record.

Salisbury (9-0) trailed 3-0 to Colorado College for the first 21 minutes of the game before the Gulls awoke and ripped off six straight goals to take control of the game.

Four different Sea Gulls scored in the first half to erase a 3-0 Tiger lead and take a 4-3 advantage into halftime.

Colorado College (3-3) senior Kate Fitzgerald scored two unassisted goals in a four-minute span to start the game. Tiger senior midfielder Robin Harvey netted her own unassisted goal at the 17:12 mark of the first half.

Salisbury answered with back-to-back unassisted goals from junior Sue Ackermann and senior Natalie Degele. Sophomore Robyn Bishop then knotted the game at three apiece on a free position shot with 1:34 left before the half. Sea Gull senior Stephanie Shores scored her first of two goals on the day, off an assist from Ackermann, with 35 seconds before the break.

The second half started scoreless but SU senior Katie Simmons ended that at the 16 minute mark with an unassisted goal past Colorado College goalie Jess Van Doren (13 saves). Minutes later, junior Jessica Liston scored off a feed from Shores to put the Gulls up 6-3.

The Tigers answered with back-to-back goals, in just over a minute, from Fitzgerald and junior Mallory Newton, off a Harvey assist with 9:43 left in the game.

Salisbury scored the game's final two goals as sophomore Jessica Chmielewski and Shores found the back of the net on unassisted goals.

SU freshman goalie Natalie Pappas (eight saves) recorded her fifth straight win in between the pipes for the Sea Gulls.

The Sea Gulls outshot the Tigers, 41-21, and scooped up 20 groundballs to CC's 16. SU also won 8-of-15 draw controls in the game.

Salisbury will host No. 7 Middlebury College at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 27.
