ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Salisbury University
men's and women's tennis teams dominated Capital Athletic
Conference foe St. Mary's (Md.) College on the road Wednesday with
convincing victories.
The Sea Gull men's team (10-2, 2-0 CAC), ranked No. 8 in the
Atlantic South region, swept the Seahawks 9-0 to earn its fifth
straight victory and fourth shutout of the year.
SU did not drop a set in the win as the maroon and gold was led by
freshmen Scott Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas, who both
played up one spot in singles. Burtzlaff earned his third win at
No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Jacob Eikenberg.
Burtzlaff is now 3-0 at No. 2 singles and 8-1 at No. 3 singles.
Thomas won the No. 3 singles match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over
Andrew MacLaughlin. Thomas is now 3-0 at No. 3 singles and 9-0 at
No. 4 singles. The two freshmen are a combined 23-1 for the
season.
Junior Brendan Kincaid won his debut at No. 1
singles this season with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Kincaid is now 5-5 in
singles matches. Senior Sean Larson and sophomores
Sasha Felikson and Shane Barry
rounded out the singles wins.
Burtzlaff and Thomas won the No. 1 double match 8-1 over the
Seahawks. The freshmen duo are normally the No. 2 doubles team.
They are now 10-2 for the season.
On the women's side, the Sea Gulls (5-4, 2-0 CAC) won its match
8-1. SU, ranked No. 14 in the region, were led by seniors
Erika Mitry and Jenny Rosler who
won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively. No. 3
singles Anna Marie Kable and Rachel
Iosue and Kelly Fahrner wrapped up the
other SU singles points. SMC won the No. 4 singles match as Sarah
Pernick defeated Hannah Parsons, 6-4, 5-7,
10-5.
SU swept the doubles matches as No. 2 doubles team of Kable and
Jackie Burr won their match 8-2 to remain a
perfect 6-0 on the year.
Salisbury tennis will be back in action on Friday, March 30, when
they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on CAC opponent Catholic
University at 3:30 pm.
