FINAL FOUR bound!

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 2 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team is heading back to the NCAA Division III final four for the fourth time in the program's history. The Sea Gulls defeated Colorado College 20-11 in the regional final Sunday afternoon in front of 300 people at the SU women's lacrosse complex.

Salisbury (20-1) will make its third final four appearance in four years and the first since 2005. The other years SU advanced to the national semifinals was in 2004 and 2000.

With the win the Sea Gulls added to their school record for most wins in a season and also broke the record for most goals and points in a season. Salisbury has scored 360 goals this year which beats the previous record of 336 set in 2000. The Sea Gulls have also totaled 550 points on the year which is 30 more than the record set in '00. SU is on the doorstep of breaking the team assists record of 193 set in 2001. Salisbury has 190 assists on the year.

The Tigers (11-6) showed no signs of fatigue from their dramatic sudden-victory win over Nazareth in Saturday's regional semifinal as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Salisbury just five minutes into the game.

Sophomore Robyn Bishop erased that lead with back-to-back goals within four minutes of each other to tie the score at two with 21 minutes left in the half. Colorado College quickly answered as Kerry O'Shaughnessy netted her first of two goals on the afternoon just 12 seconds after Bishop's second goal to reclaim the lead at 3-2.

The Sea Gulls scored the next four goals of the half, two by junior Alexis Morrell and a goal apiece by sophomore Jessica Chmielewski and senior Natalie Degele, to go up 6-3. Colorado College pulled within two goals after Marisa McGrann scored at the 10-minute mark but SU closed out the half with three of the final four goals to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.

Salisbury and Colorado College traded the first four goals of the second half to put the score at 11-7 with 26 minutes left in the game. Junior Sue Ackermann scored her first goal of the game at the 29 minute mark and Degele scored her third goal of the game on a free position shot three minutes later.

After the Tigers' Alexis Dougherty scored her lone goal of the affair to pull Colorado College within four, Ackermann cashed in on her second goal of the game and junior Jessica Liston added a score give SU breathing room at 13-7.

The Sea Gulls scored its final goals of the game in pairs. Sophomore Holly Johnson and senior Stephanie Shores scored within one minute of each other, Morrell and Shores did the same, and Morrell, Bishop and Degele rounded out the scoring to give SU the nine-goal win.

Ackermann finished with a game-high seven points (two goals, five assists) and Morrell added five of her own (four goals, one assist) to pace the Sea Gulls.

"We knew not to give up against them," said Ackermann. "This is just a thrill to be a leader on this team and head back to the final four."

Sophomore Sonja Stuart picked up her third win in as many tries as she made eight saves while Colorado College's Jess Van Doren made nine saves in a losing effort.

SU outshot the Tigers 37-28 and dominated second half draw controls, 14-4. Salisbury held the draw control advantage for the game at 20-13.

The Sea Gulls will face No. 3 Middlebury on Saturday, May 19 at 2:30 p.m. at William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. The other national semifinal game is between No. 1 Franklin & Marshall and No. 4 Gettysburg.

"Obviously we are looking forward to the game," said SU coach Jim Nestor. "We know what to expect from Middlebury on defense. It matters how their offense plays against us."
