SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 2 Salisbury University
women's lacrosse team is heading back to the NCAA Division III
final four for the fourth time in the program's history. The Sea
Gulls defeated Colorado College 20-11 in the regional final Sunday
afternoon in front of 300 people at the SU women's lacrosse
complex.
Salisbury (20-1) will make its third final four appearance in
four years and the first since 2005. The other years SU advanced to
the national semifinals was in 2004 and 2000.
With the win the Sea Gulls added to their school record for most
wins in a season and also broke the record for most goals and
points in a season. Salisbury has scored 360 goals this year which
beats the previous record of 336 set in 2000. The Sea Gulls have
also totaled 550 points on the year which is 30 more than the
record set in '00. SU is on the doorstep of breaking the team
assists record of 193 set in 2001. Salisbury has 190 assists on the
year.
The Tigers (11-6) showed no signs of fatigue from their dramatic
sudden-victory win over Nazareth in Saturday's regional semifinal
as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Salisbury just five
minutes into the game.
Sophomore Robyn Bishop erased that lead with
back-to-back goals within four minutes of each other to tie the
score at two with 21 minutes left in the half. Colorado College
quickly answered as Kerry O'Shaughnessy netted her first of two
goals on the afternoon just 12 seconds after Bishop's second goal
to reclaim the lead at 3-2.
The Sea Gulls scored the next four goals of the half, two by
junior Alexis Morrell and a goal apiece by
sophomore Jessica Chmielewski and senior
Natalie Degele, to go up 6-3. Colorado College
pulled within two goals after Marisa McGrann scored at the
10-minute mark but SU closed out the half with three of the final
four goals to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
Salisbury and Colorado College traded the first four goals of
the second half to put the score at 11-7 with 26 minutes left in
the game. Junior Sue Ackermann scored her first
goal of the game at the 29 minute mark and Degele scored her third
goal of the game on a free position shot three minutes later.
After the Tigers' Alexis Dougherty scored her lone goal of the
affair to pull Colorado College within four, Ackermann cashed in on
her second goal of the game and junior Jessica
Liston added a score give SU breathing room at 13-7.
The Sea Gulls scored its final goals of the game in pairs.
Sophomore Holly Johnson and senior
Stephanie Shores scored within one minute of each
other, Morrell and Shores did the same, and Morrell, Bishop and
Degele rounded out the scoring to give SU the nine-goal win.
Ackermann finished with a game-high seven points (two goals,
five assists) and Morrell added five of her own (four goals, one
assist) to pace the Sea Gulls.
"We knew not to give up against them," said Ackermann. "This is
just a thrill to be a leader on this team and head back to the
final four."
Sophomore Sonja Stuart picked up her third win
in as many tries as she made eight saves while Colorado College's
Jess Van Doren made nine saves in a losing effort.
SU outshot the Tigers 37-28 and dominated second half draw
controls, 14-4. Salisbury held the draw control advantage for the
game at 20-13.
The Sea Gulls will face No. 3 Middlebury on Saturday, May 19 at
2:30 p.m. at William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. The other
national semifinal game is between No. 1 Franklin & Marshall
and No. 4 Gettysburg.
"Obviously we are looking forward to the game," said SU coach
Jim Nestor. "We know what to expect from Middlebury on defense. It
matters how their offense plays against us."
