SU earns first victory with 3-0 shutout

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's soccer team scored three goals in an impressive, 3-0 shutout win, over Shenandoah University on the second day of the 8th Annual Elmer Lord Memorial Soccer Classic in front of 275 fans at the SU Soccer Complex.

Salisbury (1-0-1) was led by its defense the entire game. Senior goalie Matt Blue recorded his second consecutive shutout while the stingy Sea Gull defense only allowed only five shots (none on goal) the entire match. Salisbury has now gone 200 straight minutes to start the season without giving up a goal.

The Gulls were led offensively by sophomore Kyle Sterling (three points) who scored the final goal of the game with a header served up from a Scott Sparrow free kick and dished an assist to junior Nick Malone (two points) on the first score of the game.

SU's second goal came at the 42 minute mark when freshman Ben DeLisle placed a penalty kick in the top left corner of the net which beat Shenandoah goalie Arman Bozorgmanesh (nine saves), who made a diving attempt at the shot.

The Sea Gulls outshot the Hornets by a staggering 22-5 margin and were awarded four corner kicks.

The first game of the day saw Elmhurst College explode for five goals in a 5-1 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) College. EC was led by midfielder Jon Brehm and forward Jake Pahr who each netted two goals and passed out one assist. Senior Alex Pyzik scored the lone goal for SMC.

Salisbury will travel to Chestertown, Md., on Wednesday night (September 5) to take on Washington (Md.) College before heading south to the Esprit D-III Classic in Raleigh, N.C., next weekend.
