Napolitano's five-point game paces Salisbury to 5-2 win over St. Mary's

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's soccer team scored two goals in as many minutes to open the match with Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's (Md.) College Saturday afternoon at the SU Soccer Complex en route to a 5-2 victory.

Salisbury (10-3-1, 3-2-0 CAC) wasted no time against the Seahawks as sophomore Mike Napolitano scored off a pass from fellow sophomore Ben DeLisle 30 seconds into the match to put SU up 1-0. Napolitano found his way into the Seahawk's defensive zone again at the two-minute mark and hit junior Alex Hargrove with a pass that he smashed into the right side of the net.

Napolitano's two early scores moved him into a tie for team-leader in points (17) for the 2008 season but he was not finished. In the 12th minute the forward fed a perfectly-placed pass to hit DeLisle in stride just in time for the midfielder to score a left-footed goal.

Later in the first half, Napolitano rounded out his scoring for the day with an assist to junior Kenneth Price. His five-point game marked his highest single-game point total of the season and placed him atop the Gulls' leading scorers list for the '08 season now with 19 points (seven goals, five assists).

The four first half goals were the most scored by the Sea Gulls in the first half since the maroon and gold scored four times against Moravian College on September 7th.

Salisbury led St. Mary's, 4-2, at the half.

Freshman Sam Flax scored the Gulls' final goal of the match two minutes out of halftime as he took a pass from senior Romaine Bruney and beat Seahawk goalie Paul Spranklin. Spranklin made four saves in the contest but faced nine shots on goal from the high-powered SU offense.

St. Mary's (3-6-4, 2-2-2 CAC) received goals from senior defender Cyrus Albertson (13th minute) and junior forward Misha Simon squeezed a free kick past starting goalie junior Joshua Scotton just before halftime. In the second half, junior Greg Wellinghoff (one save) took over in goal for Salisbury for the first time since October 1 against Wesley College.

Salisbury outshot St. Mary's, 15-9, and took three more corner kicks, 7-4.

The maroon and gold will spend the next two games on the road with the first stop in Newport News, Va., against Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, October 15, at 7 p.m.
