Box Score STEVENSON, Md. - The Salisbury University men's
basketball team lost 54-47 to Johns Hopkins University in the
Provident Pride of Maryland Tournament semifinals on Saturday
evening at Stevenson University.
Salisbury (1-4) will face the loser of the second semifinal
between Washington (Md.) College and St. Mary's (Md.) College in
the third-place game on Sunday, November 30, at 4:30 p.m. on the
Stevenson campus.
The Sea Gulls were led offensively by junior forward
Matt DeLizio who was the only SU player to reach
double figures with 10 points. Sophomore forward Ryan
Hourihan added eight points while juniors Greg
Palmer and Devin Jones scored seven
points apiece. SU shot 33 percent from the field as a team.
Johns Hopkins (3-1) was paced by Adam Baumgartner who scored 14
points while Mike Henrici chipped in nine points. The Blue Jays
shot 46 percent from the field in the win. JHU also held the
rebound advantage, 35-32, as the Blue Jays grabbed 23 defensive
rebounds.
SU held a three-point lead, 28-25, with 3:38 left in the first
half but JHU rallied to close out the final minutes on a 6-2 run to
take a slim 31-30 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Blue Jays opened up their lead with
several spurts. Salisbury closed the gap to four points, 47-43,
with five minutes left to play in the game but JHU responded with a
5-0 run in the waning minutes to ice the game.
The Salisbury-Johns Hopkins semifinal was the first time the two
teams have faced each other since the 2006 Provident Pride of
Maryland championship that the Blue Jays won, 71-60. The two
schools have met three times now in this tournament and JHU has won
each one. The other JHU win over SU in the Provident Pride
tournament came in the '05 first round. JHU is now 4-1 all-time
against Salisbury. The Sea Gulls won the first meeting between the
two programs in 1980.
Salisbury is 5-6 all-time in the Provident Pride tournament
since it began in 2005. The highest finish the Sea Gulls placed was
second in '06. JHU is now 9-2 all-time in the tournament and will
make its third appearance in the title game.
