YORK, Pa. - Time ran out on the Salisbury
University men's basketball team's comeback bid Wednesday night on
the road against York (Pa.) College. The Sea Gulls (4-16, 2-9 CAC)
had the first-place Spartans (15-6, 10-2 CAC) on the ropes as the
maroon and gold went on an 18-3 run the final seven minutes of
the game only to fall short, 84-74.
York scored its final field goal on a three-pointer by Nick
Brady (19 points) with 7:49 left in the second half. The Spartans
led by their biggest margin, 25-points, 81-56.
Salisbury chipped away at the York lead and took advantage of
the Spartan turnovers. The Sea Gulls had four players reach double
figures in the loss. Sophomore Greg Palmer led the
way with 15 points. Junior forward Brandon
Abney shot 6-of-10 from the field en route to a 14-point
game, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Seniors
Gary Ward (13 points, five rebounds) and
Jonas Vaitkus (10 points, six rebounds) helped to
control the SU presence in the paint with 11 combined rebounds. SU
outrebounded the Spartans, 37-34.
Spartan Chad McGowan surpassed the 1,850 career point mark as he
scored a game-high 23 points. He added nine rebounds, four assists
and three blocks in the win. McGowan is now fourth all-time in
career points in York history.
In the first half, the Sea Gulls tied the Spartans at 35 on a
Palmer three-pointer at the 3:50 mark. York closed out the half on
a 7-0 spurt to lead 42-35 at the intermission.
York outscored Salisbury 18-2 on fast break points and held a
slight edge in the paint, 40-36.
Salisbury will next travel up Rt. 13 to face CAC rival Wesley
College on Saturday, February 9, at 4 p.m.
