Shorewomen take down Sea Gulls, 5-4

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Salisbury University women's tennis team dropped a tough non-conference match on Saturday afternoon to Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College, 5-4, at the Johnson Lifetime Fitness Center. The loss comes on the heels of Friday evening's late 9-0 sweep to New York University at the SU Indoor Tennis Center.

Salisbury's No. 1 doubles team of junior Anna Marie Kable and sophomore Rachel Iosue teamed up to take an 8-1 victory from Washington's Rebecca Davis and Mary Kelley. The Shorewomen (1-1) took the next two doubles matches from SU to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Washington's Allison Daciek, ranked 30th in the Atlantic South region for singles, defeated Kable 6-2, 7-5 in No. 1 singles. The Sea Gulls (1-2) battled back with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to knot the match at three. Sophomore Kelly Fahrner defeated the Shorewomen's No. 2 singles player Carrie Palmer in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 followed by a straight set win by Iosue over Kelley 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles.

The Shorewomen claimed victory with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Washington's Kristen Hossick defeated Robyn Wendell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles followed by the match-winner by Lydia Bull at No. 5 singles. Bull took down junior Hannah Parsons 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the win for the Shorewomen.

SU sophomore Kristen King captured a consolation victory over Kellie Foster 6-7 (7-9), 1-2 as she retired.

There is no rest for the weary as Salisbury will host St. Mary's (Md.) College tomorrow, Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m. as the Sea Gulls open up their Capital Athletic Conference schedule. SU was slated to play University of Maryland-Eastern Shore earlier in the morning but that match has been cancelled.
