Box Score SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 26 Salisbury
University baseball team pushed eight runs across the plate on
Sunday afternoon at Sea Gull Field as the maroon and gold defeated
Eastern Shore rival Washington (Md.) College 8-2 before a crowd of
125. The win is Salisbury's sixth straight of the season and at
home.
Salisbury (6-1) jumped on Shoremen starter Chris Smith (0-1)
right out of the gate as the offense scored three runs on two hits
in the first inning. Senior Justin Armiger
(1-for-4) and freshman Andrew Miller (2-for-3)
each hit RBI doubles down the left field line to drive in the three
runs. Armiger's double plated junior Randy Boyle,
who reached on a walk. Miller's double knocked in Armiger and
sophomore Mike Celenza, who also reached on a
walk.
The Sea Gull bats fell silent until the fourth inning when they
came alive and scored four runs on two hits. Junior Jordan
Crystal (1-for-5) laced a bases loaded single through the
right side of the infield to drive in Miller and freshman
Will Evans. Crystal attempted to steal second as
Boyle was at-bat. Washington catcher Rob Rifkin faked the throw to
second and caught senior Tyler Riley in a run down
at third base. Riley was able to elude the tag at home plate and
score the run. Boyle then knocked Crystal in on a RBI single.
This was the season-opener for Washington (0-1) who despite the
two big innings played well defensively. Pitcher Joe Coveney tamed
the Sea Gull offense after the fourth inning as he threw three
effective innings where he gave up jut one run on two hits and
struck out three. Washington scored its two runs on a two-run
single by Rifkin off of Sea Gull starter Ryan
Bennick in the second inning.
Bennick (2-0) earned his second win of the season as he tossed
three innings, gave up two runs on five hits and struck out two.
Salisbury's other starters junior Eric Willey and
freshman Dustin Herbert also saw action in the
game. Willey threw three innings of shutout ball as he allowed a
hit and struck out five. Herbert threw two strong innings as he
recorded six ground ball outs. Freshman Kyle
Judson came in to close out the ninth inning and retired
the side in order.
The maroon and gold open up Capital Athletic Conference play at
home on Wednesday, March 5, at 2:30 p.m. against rival York (Pa.)
College.
