DOVER, Del. - The No. 14 Salisbury University
baseball team extended its winning streak to 18 games, the longest
streak in Division III this season, with a doubleheader sweep of
Route 13 rival Wesley College on the road Monday. Salisbury
defeated Wesley 4-3 in seven innings in the first game followed by
a 7-2 win in nine innings to remain perfect in the Capital Athletic
Conference.
Salisbury (18-1, 6-0 CAC) scored two runs in the first, second
and fourth innings in the second game against Wesley (19-7, 6-5
CAC). The Sea Gulls had five doubles and plated an insurance run in
the top of the fifth to give senior pitcher Ryan
Bennick (6-0) a comfortable 7-1 lead to work with. The
right-hander pitched seven strong innings where he allowed two
Wesley runs on eight hits and struck out eight to earn the win.
Sophomore J.D. Polcari closed out the final two
innings for the Gulls. Wesley committed five errors in the second
game as the Wolverines had seven for the day.
Freshman Andrew Miller had two doubles in the
second game as he went 3-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore first
baseman Mike Celenza drove in two runs in both
games.
In the first game, SU junior starter Eric
Willey (4-0) pitched the complete game as he allowed three
runs on four hits as he struck out six Wolverines to earn the win.
Salisbury scored a run in the second and third innings to jump out
to an early 2-0 lead. The Sea Gulls plated two more runs in the
fifth inning without a hit as Wesley made two errors. The
Wolverines scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Willey closed out the game with a 1-2-3 seventh as he struck out
two batters.
This begins a busy stretch for the Sea Gulls who will next
travel to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, March 26, to face
Gallaudet University in another CAC game.
