SALISBURY, Md. - Senior Ryan
Bennick went the distance on the mound to earn the
complete-game shutout as the No. 26 Salisbury University baseball
team defeated York (Pa.) College 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon in the
Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Sea Gull
Field.
The win extends Salisbury's winning streak to seven games as the
maroon and gold remain undefeated at home this season. York, on the
other hand, has now lost five straight.
Bennick (3-0) dominated all day as he only needed 108 pitches in
the nine-inning gem. His command was excellent as he did not walk a
batter and struck out six. York (1-8, 0-1 CAC) grounded into two
double plays as Bennick got out of his toughest jam in the top of
the seventh inning. Spartan senior Tim Frisch stepped to the plate
with one out and the bases loaded for York. Frisch promptly
grounded into the 6-4-3 double play end the inning and the scoring
threat by the Spartans.
Salisbury (7-1, 1-0 CAC) got off to another fast start as the
offense plated three runs in the first inning sparked by an RBI
double by sophomore Mike Celenza. Senior
Justin Armiger (3-for-3) had a great day at the
plate as he launched a two-run home run to left field in the third
inning. Freshman Andrew Miller took the lead from
Armiger and slammed a solo home run to left a batter later to give
SU a 6-0 lead through three innings.
Senior Mark Bostwick added three RBIs on the
day, two of which came on a bases loaded single in the seventh.
Junior Randy Boyle (2-for-4) also had a fine day
at the plate as recorded two hits, scored three times and had one
RBI.
The Spartans were led offensively by Anthony Anzalone and Mike
Connolly who recorded two hits apiece. Devin Harbold came off the
bench to pinch hit in the eighth and led of the inning with a
double but the Spartans couldn't capitalize.
The maroon and gold will look to ride the momentum into a tough
weekend stretch as they will host Montclair State on Friday, March
7, at 2 p.m. and on Sunday, March 9 at Noon. Sandwiched between the
Montclair games is a road trip to York, Pa., on Saturday, March 8,
for a doubleheader with the Spartans at Noon.
