ASHLAND, Va. - The No. 17 Salisbury University
men's soccer team tripped up the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon
College 2-0 in a non-conference game on Saturday
afternoon. The Sea Gulls have not given up a goal in their
past 500 minutes of play. The win marked their fifth consecutive
shutout.
Salisbury junior midfielder Kyle Sterling
received a red card early into the second half and the Sea Gulls
were forced to play a man down for 64 minutes. The defense
rose to the challenge and continued their spectacular play. Junior
goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff had another
outstanding game in goal as he made nine saves.
Salisbury (6-0) used a pair of first half penalty kicks to put
away the Yellow Jackets (1-4). Sterling scored on the first penalty
kick at the 24:13 mark. Freshman midfielder Sam
Flax tacked on another penalty kick 11 minutes later to
put the game away.
Randolph-Macon outshot Salisbury 16-10 led by sophomore
defenseman David Lynch who registered four shots and freshman
forward Mike Urbanik had three. RMC tallied five corner kicks
on the day to Salisbury's four.
The Sea Gulls will return to action on Tuesday, September 16,
with a home game at 4 p.m. against Gallaudet University to begin
the Capital Athletic Conference schedule for the maroon and
gold.
