Penalty kicks lift Salisbury past Randolph-Macon, 2-0

ASHLAND, Va. - The No. 17 Salisbury University men's soccer team tripped up the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College 2-0 in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Sea Gulls have not given up a goal in their past 500 minutes of play. The win marked their fifth consecutive shutout.

Salisbury junior midfielder Kyle Sterling received a red card early into the second half and the Sea Gulls were forced to play a man down for 64 minutes. The defense rose to the challenge and continued their spectacular play. Junior goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff had another outstanding game in goal as he made nine saves.

Salisbury (6-0) used a pair of first half penalty kicks to put away the Yellow Jackets (1-4). Sterling scored on the first penalty kick at the 24:13 mark. Freshman midfielder Sam Flax tacked on another penalty kick 11 minutes later to put the game away.

Randolph-Macon outshot Salisbury 16-10 led by sophomore defenseman David Lynch who registered four shots and freshman forward Mike Urbanik had three. RMC tallied five corner kicks on the day to Salisbury's four.

The Sea Gulls will return to action on Tuesday, September 16, with a home game at 4 p.m. against Gallaudet University to begin the Capital Athletic Conference schedule for the maroon and gold.
