Bruney stings Lynchburg with 2OT goal to lift No. 17 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – Senior midfielder Romaine Bruney picked a great time to score his first goal of the season for the No. 17 Salisbury University men's soccer team. Bruney gathered a pass from sophomore forward Mike Napolitano in the middle of field, made a move against the Lynchburg College goalie to the right, and blasted the game-winner into the bottom left corner of the goal in the 102nd minute. The goal gave SU the 2-1 double overtime victory over Lynchburg before a crowd of 350 at the SU Soccer Complex on Saturday.

The Sea Gulls (8-0-0) scored first with an unassisted goal by junior defenseman Benjamin Reed in the 43rd minute of the first half. Reed took a shot from the left side and buried it into the upper right corner of the goal past a diving Matt Sturdivant (two saves) in goal for the Hornets.

The game remained scoreless until Lynchburg (5-2-0) knotted the game up at 1-1 with only 55 seconds left in regulation. Hornet midfielder Cam Smith was credited with the goal on an assist by Josh Reed.

Smith's goal broke Salisbury's consecutive scoreless minute streak at 687 minutes. It was the first goal given up by the Sea Gull defense since their season opener. SU goalie Greg Wellinghoff made two saves in the game as his record improved to 8-0-0 for the season. The maroon and gold have outscored their opponents 24-2 on the season.

Lynchburg's Drew Nichols took over in goal for the Hornets in the second half as he made two saves in 57 minutes of action.

The game proved to be very physical with a total of 31 fouls and four yellow cards. Salisbury had 19 of those fouls and two yellows. The Sea Gulls had six corner kicks to Lynchburg's four. SU had 12 shots, three in the overtime periods, compared to Lynchburg's 10 total shots.

SU will return to action on Tuesday, September 23, with a non-conference game against Goucher College in Towson, Md., at 4 p.m.
