SALISBURY, Md. - No. 3 York (Pa.) College
turned the tables on No. 17 Salisbury University as the Spartans
ended the Sea Gulls' 17-game unbeaten streak Saturday with a 2-1
victory before 450 at Sea Gull Stadium. The two nationally ranked
rivals battled the elements as strong rain showers forced the site
of the game to be moved from the grass surface of the SU Soccer
Complex to the A-Turf surface at Sea Gull Stadium.
This highly anticipated game was a rematch of last year's
Capital Athletic Conference championship that Salisbury won 2-0.
During the regular-season the Gulls ended York's 49-game unbeaten
streak with a 1-0 road victory.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half. York
(9-0-0, 2-0-0 CAC) scored first as the Spartans got on the board
seven minutes into the second half. Midfielder Aaron Good took a
shot from the right side of the goalie box that trickled into the
left side of the net.
Salisbury (8-1-1, 1-1-0 CAC) quickly answered 11 minutes later
as senior midfielder Romaine Bruney broke free on
a fast break and dished the ball to junior midfielder Kyle
Sterling, who booted the ball past York goalie Kyle Marks
(three saves) to tie the game.
York would regain the lead in the 84th minute when reigning CAC
Player of the Year Jon Ports passed the ball back to midfielder
Trey Good. Trey Good, no relation to Aaron Good, ripped a shot
towards the lower left corner of the Sea Gull net. The shot sneaked
past SU goalie Greg Wellinghoff (three saves) into
the back of the net.
The Spartans outshot the Sea Gulls 20-7 (13-4 in the second
half) and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. The game was very
physical between the two conference rivals as they combined to
commit 29 fouls and received several cards.
Salisbury will look to bounce back on Wednesday, October 1, when
the Sea Gulls travel up Rt. 13 to face conference foe Wesley
College at 7 p.m.
