Salisbury outlasts Hood, Jones drains season-high 32 points

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - Junior guard Devin Jones scored a season-high 32 points to guide the Salisbury University men's basketball team to its fourth straight conference win as the Sea Gulls outlasted Hood College, 86-85, in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Saturday in Frederick, Md.  Jones' performance helped push the Sea Gulls to their fifth win in their last six games

Salisbury (9-9, 6-3 CAC) evened its season record, as for the second consecutive game, the Sea Gulls came up big from the free-throw line. SU held a four-point advantage with 22 seconds left in the game after Jones made two clutch free throws. After a Sea Gull foul and an offensive put back, Hood would cut the SU lead to one. The Blazers had two opportunities to knock down the game- winner in the final 10 seconds but did not come through. The teams combined to go 28-31 (90%) from the free-throw line in the second half.

Jones (four steals, three rebounds) did the majority of his damage in the first half as he caught fire from the start of the game. He poured in 20 first half points on an 8-for-10 shooting performance, which included a perfect 4-for-4 effort from behind the three-point arc.

Fellow junior guard Greg Palmer (six rebounds) pushed his double-digit point streak to 13 games. Palmer poured in 22 points, 11 in each half, on 8-of-12 shooting performance from the field. Sophomore forward Ryan Hourihan gave the Sea Gulls a boost off the bench with 14 points, six rebounds (three offensive) and a 6-for-7 effort from the free-throw line.  Junior guard Ronald Mann (five rebounds) and senior guard Sean Whittaker each posted eight points.

Hood (5-12, 2-6 CAC) had four players reach double figures led by J'Air Brady with 19 points and five turnovers. Tim Abercrombie added 17 points and seven rebounds in the loss. Brenden Straughn (15 points) and Jeff Willison (10 points) helped pace the Blazer offense.

The maroon and gold will be back in action on Wednesday, January 28, as they will return to the road to face the Univeristy of Mary Washington. The Eagles clipped the Sea Gulls by eight in their previous meeting, 70-62. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
