Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - Junior guard
Devin Jones scored a season-high 32 points to
guide the Salisbury University men's basketball team to its fourth
straight conference win as the Sea Gulls outlasted Hood College,
86-85, in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Saturday in
Frederick, Md. Jones' performance helped push the Sea
Gulls to their fifth win in their last six games
Salisbury (9-9, 6-3 CAC) evened its season record, as for
the second consecutive game, the Sea Gulls came up big from the
free-throw line. SU held a four-point advantage with 22
seconds left in the game after Jones made two clutch free
throws. After a Sea Gull foul and an offensive put back, Hood would
cut the SU lead to one. The Blazers had two opportunities to
knock down the game- winner in the final 10 seconds but did
not come through. The teams combined to go 28-31 (90%) from the
free-throw line in the second half.
Jones (four steals, three rebounds) did the majority of his
damage in the first half as he caught fire from the start of the
game. He poured in 20 first half points on an 8-for-10 shooting
performance, which included a perfect 4-for-4 effort from behind
the three-point arc.
Fellow junior guard Greg Palmer (six rebounds)
pushed his double-digit point streak to 13 games. Palmer poured in
22 points, 11 in each half, on 8-of-12 shooting performance from
the field. Sophomore forward Ryan Hourihan gave
the Sea Gulls a boost off the bench with 14 points, six rebounds
(three offensive) and a 6-for-7 effort from the free-throw
line. Junior guard Ronald Mann (five
rebounds) and senior guard Sean Whittaker
each posted eight points.
Hood (5-12, 2-6 CAC) had four players reach double figures
led by J'Air Brady with 19 points and five turnovers. Tim
Abercrombie added 17 points and seven rebounds in the loss. Brenden
Straughn (15 points) and Jeff Willison (10 points) helped pace
the Blazer offense.
The maroon and gold will be back in action on Wednesday, January
28, as they will return to the road to face the Univeristy of Mary
Washington. The Eagles clipped the Sea Gulls by eight in their
previous meeting, 70-62. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
