ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The three-game winning
streak for the Salisbury University men's basketball team was
snapped Wednesday night on the road with a 63-52 loss to defending
Capital Athletic Conference champion St. Mary's (Md.) College. The
Sea Gulls could not exact revenge against the Seahawks in a rematch
of last year's conference semifinal game.
Salisbury (4-8, 1-2 CAC) was led by sophomore forward
Ryan Hourihan, who registered his first
double-double of the season, as he reached career-highs in points
(18) and rebounds (14). Greg Palmer, the reigning
CAC Player of the Week, scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds
and made three assists in 38 minutes. This is the seventh straight
game the junior forward has reached double figure point totals and
the 10th time this season he has reached this feat.
The Sea Gulls fell behind early in the contest as the Seahawks
(10-2, 3-0 CAC) took a quick 12-point lead, 14-2, just five minutes
in. The Sea Gulls would make a strong push at the end of the half
to decrease the Seahawk lead to just four at halftime, 26-22.
Salisbury would capture the lead for the first time in the
contest less than a minute into the second half when junior guard
Devin Jones scored his first three-pointer of the
game. The teams would trade baskets for the first couple minutes of
the second half before St. Mary's went on a 24-8 run over the next
12 minutes. The SMC run pushed the Seahawk lead up to 15 points,
52-37, with a little over five minutes left in the game.
The Seahawks were led by Alex Franz who had a game-high 20
points behind a 7-for-11 shooting performance from the field.
Camontae Griffith (17 points) and Mike Bowden (six points, nine
rebounds) each helped St. Mary's earn the win.
Salisbury will return to action on Saturday, January 10 with a
CAC road game against rival York (Pa.) College at 2 p.m. The Sea
Gulls defeated the Spartans 74-63 on December 9 in the first
meeting of the season between the two teams at the Maggs Center.
